Troubleshooting

I've noticed a large number of preventable Dash Cam failures being reported. My long Troubleshooting Guide doesn't cover everything but it will be continually updated to include new tests and fixes. Starting with simple verifications for all accessories such as microSD card functionality, quality, class and speed. Cheap or fake cards will cause all types of issues. For testing use original cables and adapters, then swap to shorter cables and alternate power source.

Solutions and Suggestions to Prevent Failures

Always Format new microSD card either from Dashcam Menu or computer as FAT32.

Do you power multiple Dashcams from socket adapter or hardwire kit and notice one camera doesn't startup?
<<suggest only powering 2 cameras from same source, don't charge phones on same circuit >>

Did all A129 camera buttons stop working?
<<always Turn Off WiFi to restore dashcam button functionality, never drive with WiFi enabled >>

Did you insert or remove the memory card while powered on?
<<always Power OFF / disconnect power before inserting/ejecting memory card >>

Did you remove memory card after disconnecting power but while REC button light was red?
<<always wait 10 seconds after disconnecting power before card eject/insert >>

Firmware Update does nothing stays on previous version?
<<verify Firmware binary file is correct. If Camera is new Boot Loader was incorrectly applied by Vendor, leave message below. >>

Issues with videos clips recording to memory card?
<<Format Memory card from Dashcam Menu, use different speed/brand card, set Loop Recording for 1min, 2min or 3min, for high bitrate use 1 or 2min >>

Memory card randomly not detected correctly, Format Required message reappearing?
<<remove then clean card contacts reinsert, Format Memory card from Dashcam Menu see DIY video >>

Startup stuck on Logo screen?
<<disconnect power wait 10 seconds for red REC light to go out (drain caps), reconnect power>>

Using GPS Module version1 gold pin contacts with repeated Restarts?
<<poor power connection, Trade-in get V2 else stabilize mount, clean contacts, secure tiny 4contact plate, watch Clean Contacts video>>

Dashcam repeatedly Restarts when driving?
<<poor power connection, check adapter & cable connections, clean contacts, GOTO Part C>>

Do you use the Car Number & Custom Text options?
<<clear them manually before updating firmware>>

Does power source provide stable 5volts and 1-3Amps with no other device sharing the load?
<<test with another device or swap out>>

Did you attempt to update Firmware using a Power Bank and update failed?
<<suggest vehicle power or indoor 1-3Amp 5volt power adapter, or turn on power bank LED during update>>

Did you update Firmware using computer low power USB 2.0 port and failed?
<<reduce the risk, use vehicle power or indoor 5 volt 1-3Amp adapter>>

Did you download and copy the correct Firmware binary file for your Dashcam?
<<triple check and if unsure do not update, Firmware must match Dashcam model>>

Was 128GB memory card used for Firmware updates then strange issues occurred?
<<works well on quality cards but reduce risk use smaller 32-64GB card>>

After updating Firmware do you perform Default Settings clearing?
<<start doing this anyway after all Firmware Updates>>

The following procedure can identify and resolve numerous VIOFO Dashcam issues.

Last video clip file corruption Fix
Common issue when VIOFO Dashcam isn't used for 14-21 days <or> if SuperCapacitors have failed and require replacement <or> if memory card is removed while red REC button is still lit.
1) Suggest connecting A119/P/S to 5 volt smartphone/tablet charger indoors for 1 hour allowing it to record video on memory card, enable Parking Mode for testing to save storage space. The point is to allow Capacitors and tiny RTC battery to charge (RTC normally takes 4 hours).
2) After that power cycle dashcam by disconnecting power cable waiting 12 seconds then reconnecting power cable.
3) Remember to watch the REC button light to see if its staying on 4-6 seconds longer after disconnecting power cable.
Always wait for red REC button light to go off before ejecting or inserting microSD memory card.

Troubleshooting Common Issues on A119 or A119S (may apply to A119 PRO & A129)
Part A - Power on Bare Bones Test

1) detach Dashcam from GPS Mount.
2) remove microSD memory card.
3) connect power cable to miniUSB side port on Dashcam.
4) turn On Power (vehicle ignition or 5volt charger).

9) // IF Dashcam Stuck THEN CONTINUE Part E ELSE Dashcam works GOTO END //

Part E - Replace both Capacitors (STOP if had no experience solding)
1) with Dashcam back cover open gently detach Lens/Sensor Ribbon cable (less chance of scratching Lens)
2) remove 4 screws holding main circuit board to plastic frame.
3) gently lift top edge (sensor end) of circuit board to access reverse side of Capacitor solder joints.
4) draw diagram showing polarity of capacitors, do not straighten LCD ribbon cable it breaks.
5) using 25 to 40watt soldering iron heat bottom joint then pull cap from opposite side to remove each wire. (experience needed)
6) trim new  HyCap 7F 2.7 Volt (VEC2R7705Q6) SuperCapacitor -or- KamCap 3.3F 2.7V SuperCapacitor -or- Nichicon 3.3F 2.7V SuperCapacitor (-25C<->70C) connector leads to same length as originals. (depending on cap thickness for bending over)
7) carefully solder each new capacitor, verify polarity position twice (warning: else caps explode)
8) verify new capacitors bend into flat position.
9) reassemble Dashcam
10) Test using Bare Bones setup in Part A

END
good luck

  1. VIOFO A129 Duo freezes

Today, the camera started to freeze after about half an hour. I use a connection through 3 hardware kit, SD card SDXC 128GB and your FW MOD 7Up. The camera could not be turned off in the car - I had to unplug the power cable and it still took a long time to turn off the diodes. I can provide erroneous driving records. This problem has happened to me earlier with the original FW 1.5.
At home, I connected the camera with a USB cable to the power bank and everything worked normally.
Please help where to look for a mistake.
    Thank you
    Regards
    Karel Benda

    1. If your issue occurs with MODs and Stock Firmware it's usually either memory card which can be changed, or the power source. The A129 requires Hardwire Kit be connected to camera side USB port, not the mount. Suggest formatting memory card inside dashcam using menu option, if possible use 64GB for testing. Read the Advice page in Accessories section.

    2. just bought the Viofo A129, i gathered from your response, when hardwiring use the cameras usb port. In my directions from Dashoto it says use gps usb port, which is best?

    3. The A129 GPS mount is flawed since it doesn't support advanced Parking Mode. If you don't use Parking Mode connect power to GPS mount. If Parking Mode is selected must connect to camera side USB port.

  3. My cam no longer keep time/date. I have to reset the time/date once a week otherwise it will reset. Is it the RTC battery? How do I change it? Is it soldered?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The tiny RTC rechargeable battery is soldered to circuit board under the copper shield corner shown in image above. This tiny battery only holds a charge for maximum 21 days. Suggest you first confirm it no longer holds full charge by connecting dashcam to stable indoor power supply for 4 hours and allow battery to charge. Infrequent Dashcam use will discharge RTC sooner. There is probably no need to replace the RTC battery unless it fails the 4 hour charge cycle.

    2. I charged the cam overnight but sadly it retained date for only two days. After that the time/date reset it self to 1\1\2018. Looks like I need to replace the RTC battery. Any advice? I can do soldering fine but are there any recommendations? Like what the type of the battery because I've never used this type of battery before. Also I took the cam apart to take a quick look at the battery and I think it is soldered from top is that right?
      Any info is appreciated.
      Thanks in advance.

  4. Loaded wrong firmware, any ideas?
Hi, thanks for hosting the site. I picked up a working A119 with 3.6 firmware. Regardless how many times I tried to update it to 4.1 it failed to flash the new firmware. I looked at the directory on the Micro SDcard and the firmware had been deleted.
I thought I'd try and new Micro SDcard. I went to the site and mistakenly downloaded the A119S firmware. Strange thing the A119 took the firmware and flashed it in the camera.
Now the camera boots up to the VIOFO splash screen and stops.
Any idea how I can force the camera into a mode that will accept a new flash?

    1. The A119 V2 has known issues with v3.6 firmware, some online vendors have locked version. As you discovered NEVER update dashcam with wrong model firmware. The A119 is the only dashcam with fragile bootloader which you have now damaged. Do the following from PART-B steps above . . . disconnect power cable from A119, remove memory card and delete all files using PC, then reinsert in A119, then reconnect power cable to test functionality. If it starts normally leave FW v3.6 then contact vendor for their update procedure. If the A119 remains stuck disconnect power cable and remove memory card, now connect power cable to test startup, if cannot enter MENU attempt the BOOTLOADER update procedure in STEP-B above.

  5. Solved! OK this is what I did to revive the camera after loading in the wrong firmware. I have an A119V2 camera. I downloaded an A119 firmware, name of the file FWBA119.bin. I renamed the firmware to the name of the wrong firmware in my case FWA119S.bin. I copied it to a FAT32 formatted card. Inserted the card added and powered up the camera. The camera updated the firmware and it is working again.

  6. Firmware Update does nothing stays on previous version?
    <>

Per above. I have A119 (not v2 etc) with firmware 3.6 so that installed correctly.

I now just plug the cam into the computer, the mass storage message automatically appears and the red led (rec) starts flashing. 45 minutes later, I can't wait any longer, unplug and plug it into the car. Still on 3.6.

So what am I doing wrong? I was under the impression that once I got over v2.0, firmware update was automatic. It appears to me not to be the case.

    1. Most A119 V2 Dashcams sold online with firmware version 3.6 are locked. If you cannot update the original firmware to official Viofo version 4.0, suggest you return the dashcam. Easiest way to update firmware is copy the official FWBA119.bin file to the microSD card using a card reader attached to a computer USB port then insert the memory card into the dashcam and power up using 5 volt smartphone adapter or power on from vehicle. Update only takes 90 seconds or less and restarts dashcam once finished.

  7. Hi!

I have some issues with my new Viofo A119 V2.

When watching the recorded videos, you can hear a strange noise every second.
It has to be a problem with the gps module since you don't hear any noises when using the camera without it.

    Any tips?

    1. The A119 V2 GPS module requires design flaw fix to prevent mount audio issues. Must apply the thin EVA foam pad to fix camera and mount vibrations.

  12. Hello, what do you think? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrhzF5DBfDw&ab_channel=mikiw2002 What is the problem? In parking mode always after about 10 hours this happening(when memory card is full or close to full), after beep beep camera turn off. Viofo tell me this is ok and they dont see any problem... I tried newest version of software VIOFO but it didnt help. I tried 4 different memory cards and didnt help too.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. All Viofo dashcams reserve "some" space for Parking Mode clips, once that limit is reached and memory card is full = shutdown is triggered. Verify the LOOP setting is enabled for 1/2/3/5 min clips to force file overwrite. Its too bad Viofo doesn't offer dedicated memory card slot for Parking recordings.

    1. If that A119v2 is NOT S or P version and is the 1440p original with horizontal aiming lens you'll need to force BootLoader firmware update. Once complete must update normal firmware last. Look for instructions in this Blog or at Viofo website.

  14. The solution is do not purchase any VIOFO products as this frozen screen has affected thousands of customers and VIOFO support has done absolutely nothing to solve the issue

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. To avoid VIOFO dashcam frozen screen issue ALWAYS perform Firmware updates using the exact binary file version for your dashcam and ALWAYS use 5 volt 1-3 Amp phone power adapter or vehicle power adapter and NEVER computer USB 2.0 port with only 500milliAmp power. ALWAYS download Firmware updates from Viofo official website or trusted source.

Most issues are caused by wrong firmware or low power or not waiting long enough for update to restart dashcam. The old A119 2k dashcam firmware binary file is names:
      A119 V3 1440p = FWA119V3.bin
      A119 V1 V2 1440p = FWBA119.bin (fix loader = LDBA119.bin)
      A119 Pro 1440p = FWA119P.bin
      A119S 1080p = FWA119S.bin

The VIOFO frozen screen can be caused by owner with old A119S 1080p resolution wanting to improve the image quality and attempted to force the 1440p firmware version on the 1080p dashcam.

NEVER rename FWBA119.bin to FWA119S.bin then flash the binary on A119S.

  15. I have the A119S dashcam and it was working fine until I updated yesterday with the latest firmware v4.0 and now it's not booting up at all. Where can I get the loader binary file LDA119S.BIN? Thanks

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If possible flash update to older Firmware than v4.0 to stabilize the camera. Contact Viofo Support with Service Ticket to request the Boot Loader Binary fix, then flash update Loader then wait for restart then disconnect power and erase SD memory card and copy stable FWA119S.bin firmware to SD card - reinsert card then power on dashcam using 5volt 1-3 Amp power source for best results.
